Tinnitus (ringing in ears) management

Tinnitus — the perception of ringing, buzzing or other noises without an external source — can be distressing and affect sleep, concentration and quality of life. Our approach focuses on identifying underlying causes, reducing symptom severity and improving coping strategies through evidence-based therapies and personalised care.

Treatments Offered

We offer targeted evaluation and multi-modal management for tinnitus:

  • Comprehensive Assessment: Detailed history, audiometry, tympanometry and specialized tests to identify contributing factors.

  • Medical Management: Treating underlying ear disease, medication review and managing associated conditions such as ear infections or Eustachian tube dysfunction.

  • Hearing Rehabilitation: Hearing aids or sound enrichment devices to reduce the perceived loudness of tinnitus by improving environmental sounds.

  • Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT): A structured program combining sound therapy and counselling to habituate the brain to tinnitus.

  • Vestibular & Cognitive Therapies: Vestibular rehabilitation or cognitive behavioural strategies for patients with associated balance or psychological impact.

  • Referral & Advanced Care: Imaging, specialist neurologic or psychiatric referral when indicated for complex cases.

Symptoms & Causes

Tinnitus may present as ringing, buzzing, hissing, or roaring and can be intermittent or constant. You should seek evaluation if you experience:

  • Persistent or worsening ear noises that affect sleep or concentration

  • Hearing loss or a sense of fullness in the ear

  • New onset tinnitus following noise exposure, head injury or medications

  • Associated dizziness, ear pain or discharge

Common causes include age-related hearing changes, noise exposure, earwax blockage, middle- or inner-ear disease, certain medications, vascular or neurological conditions, and stress-related factors.

Prevention

While not all tinnitus can be prevented, these measures reduce risk and help manage symptoms:

  • Protect ears from loud noise with earplugs or earmuffs

  • Avoid ototoxic medications when alternatives exist and review medications with your doctor

  • Manage stress, sleep and overall health to reduce tinnitus perception

  • Seek early assessment for sudden tinnitus, hearing loss or related symptoms
