Grommet Insertion

Grommet insertion is a safe and minimally invasive procedure in which a tiny ventilation tube is placed in the eardrum to drain fluid and equalise pressure in the middle ear. It is especially helpful for children or adults with chronic ear fluid, repeated ear infections or hearing problems due to middle-ear blockage.

Treatments Offered

We offer precise and comfortable grommet insertion procedures, including:

  • Myringotomy with Grommet Placement: A tiny incision is made in the eardrum to drain fluid, followed by insertion of a tube to maintain air flow.

  • Management of Glue Ear (Otitis Media with Effusion): Ideal for children with persistent fluid causing hearing loss or speech delay.

  • Treatment for Recurrent Ear Infections: Helps reduce repeated infections by ensuring proper middle-ear ventilation.

  • Specialized Pediatric Care: Child-friendly procedure performed under safe conditions to ensure comfort and quick recovery.

  • Adult Grommet Procedures: Beneficial for pressure-related ear problems such as barotrauma or chronic middle-ear fluid.

Symptoms & Causes

A grommet may be needed if you or your child experiences:

  • Difficulty hearing or muffled hearing due to fluid in the middle ear

  • Frequent ear infections or repeated antibiotic use

  • Speech delay or learning difficulty in children linked to hearing issues

  • Persistent fluid or negative pressure in the ear despite medication

Causes include Eustachian tube dysfunction, frequent colds, allergies, enlarged adenoids, chronic ear infections, or fluid accumulation due to poor middle-ear ventilation.

Post-procedure Care

After grommet insertion, we recommend:

  • Avoiding water entry into ears while bathing or swimming

  • Regular follow-up visits to monitor grommet function and ear health

  • Recognizing that the grommet usually falls out naturally within 6–12 months

  • Seeking prompt care if discharge or pain occurs
